FISH CREEK, WI (Mar. 5, 2013) – Western swing performing and recording artist Carolyn Martin will be featured in concert Wednesday, March 20 at the White Gull Inn in Fish Creek. Tickets for the 8 PM concert, the fifth of six in the inn's winter acoustic music series, are $16.
Although she is new to the White Gull series, Door County audiences may remember the 2011 guest appearance of Martin and her husband and musical collaborator Dave with Eric Lewis at Fishstock in Fish Creek. Performing classic cover tunes and original material, Martin says she draws her inspiration not only from the classic western swing groups of the 1930's through the 1950's, but also from the big band swing era, Broadway show tunes and southern blues. Critics have lauded her unique sense of style, a charismatic stage presence and a voice that exudes passion and experience.
Martin's album "Cookin' with Carolyn" was named the 2011 Best Western Swing Album by the Western Music Association and her prior project, "Swing", was named as one of the top Swing CD's of 2009. She was recently named the 2010 Western Swing Female Vocalist of the Year by the Academy of Western Artists and was nominated by the Western Music Association for four awards in 2010, including album of the year and female vocalist of the year. She was inducted into the Texas Western Swing Hall of Fame in 2011.
"Tennessee Local", Martin's latest CD, includes her original material and songs from composers like Irving Berlin and George Gershwin as well as western swing composers like Cindy Walker and Fred Rose. "Western swing is so amiable because it is meant to be fun music," she said. "It was created as a distraction in the '30s; those were hard times, and it was created for people to go out on Saturday night and dance and forget about their troubles for a little while. I couldn't tell you exactly what swing means," adds Martin, "but you can feel it. You know it when you hear it."
An optional pre-concert fixed price dinner will be served at 6 PM. The menu will consist of Stout Braised Short Ribs –horseradish scented mash potatoes and baby carrots, salad and Chocolate Orange Guinness cake for dessert.
Tickets for the concert, reservations for dinner and information can be obtained by calling the White Gull at 920-868-3517.
